In addition to being nationally recognized for excellence in rural medicine and primary care, there are many other reasons to consider Quillen as your destination for medical school!

If you ask any of our students why they chose Quillen, you are likely to hear a wide array of answers; however, there is certain to be one word common among them – community. Located in the heart of East Tennessee, the Quillen College of Medicine serves the community of Northeast Tennessee and the surrounding Appalachian region. However, for our students, the term community extends far beyond a regional description – it’s a way of life. It’s a term that applies to our hospitals, clinics, and classrooms.

This sense of community is so evident throughout the College of Medicine that we’ve collectively begun to call it the “Quillen Family”. The Quillen Family isn’t something that extends just to our students; our faculty takes it to heart, as well. The faculty of Quillen is dedicated to serve as both teachers and mentors to our students and you will often see first-year students working in our hospitals, clinics, and research facilities. There are plenty of opportunities for first year students to gain both clinical and research experience, and our faculty enjoy sharing their passion for medicine with our students.

"The people who make up Quillen provide a supportive, family-like environment. Consequently my medical school experience, which could have been a stressful experience at another school, has become the most enjoyable time of my life so far."

-Jacob F.

"I chose Quillen because when I interviewed here it truly felt like a family. When we say "Quillen Family" it can seem like a gimmick, but in my experience it has been the absolute truth. Everyone I have met from my classmates to the faculty to the staff has been so kind to me."

-KD H.

"I chose Quillen because I felt a true connection there. Most everyone I met was supportive of my pursuit of medicine, regardless of whether or not I intended on going to Quillen or some other school. They are truly devoted to making the best doctors, not just the best future alumni."

-Megan M.

"Quillen felt like "home" from the first time I visited campus. The people I met--from administrators to interviewers--were all friendly and helpful. Students told me it was a great place, and now that I'm a student, I definitely agree!"

Why I chose Quillen

Why Choose Quillen?

Our student body exemplifies this sense of community through a variety of community outreach programs, such as our involvement with local health fairs, and our high school outreach program.  Students also lead a variety of medical interest groups to provide all students with the opportunity to explore their interests and gain valuable knowledge and experience.

"I went to undergrad at University of South Carolina, and I thought I wanted to go to medical school in SC too. That was before I came to visit Quillen. The second I stepped on this campus for my interview, I was sold. I never felt more welcome at any other school, and I got that "Quillen Family" vibe. I'm so glad I was accepted and ended up coming here. I couldn't have made a better decision."
